Before January 1, 2024, all non-tobacco flavored tobacco products will be discontinued in Bulgaria. The recent amendment to the Law on Tobacco and Tobacco Products, approved by deputies, establishes this provision without encountering any debate.
The move comes in response to a European Commission directive that could see Bulgaria face criminal proceedings if it is not followed. The purpose behind these amendments is to reduce the appeal of heated tobacco products, particularly by eliminating flavor options.
Additionally, each package of heated tobacco products will be required to display a warning highlighting the risks associated with use.
Under the revised law, the Ministry of Economy and Industry will be responsible for banning tobacco products containing additives that significantly increase toxicity, addictiveness or pose a risk of cancer, mutation or reproductive toxicity.
The enactment of these legislative changes is pending formal publication in the National Gazette.
