Pakistan fails to roll out tobacco product tracking system as planned

According to recent media reports, Pakistan is unable to roll out a tobacco product tracking system by the end of this year as planned.

The tobacco product tracking system tracks the entire process of tobacco products from production to sales through bar codes, unique identification numbers and a central monitoring system, which can prevent tax evasion and illegal transactions.

Currently Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC), Philip Morris International Pakistan and Khyber Tobacco Company have incorporated the system into their manufacturing facilities, but other manufacturers including Civil Tobacco Company, Frontier Tobacco Company, Falcon Cigarette Industries, Indus Tobacco companies and Manily Tobacco International have only completed part of the work. Some companies have either refused to adopt the system or are delaying, citing technical and financial difficulties.
