Researchers investigate effects of mixing traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes

A new project sponsored by the Center of Excellence for Accelerated Harm Reduction (CoEHAR) will investigate the impact of combined use of traditional and e-cigarettes on human health.

The study, "Extent of cigarette substitution after e-cigarette initiation and its impact on biomarkers of exposure and potential harm among dual users" ("Magnificat"), included more than 300 dual users.

Using specific biomarkers, clinical endpoints and behavioral correlates, researchers will monitor participant health to quantify the impact of transitioning to combustion-free products.

Participants will be asked to reduce their consumption of traditional cigarettes and switch to e-cigarettes for a period of time. According to CoEHAR, the findings will be of great interest in addressing questions related to smoking harm reduction in clinical and behavioral settings.
