According to a recent report by Spanish media Infobae, Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia will face a series of challenges in 2024, of which two focus issues have attracted much attention.
First, she needs to promote the implementation of the Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Plan for 2021-2025, which focuses on expanding smoke-free areas, implementing universal packaging, and regulating e-cigarettes; second, she needs to improve the quality of public health services by reducing medical waiting lists .
The draft Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Plan 2021-2025 was formulated in 2021 by the Ministry of Health led by former Health Minister Salvador Illa, which includes regulating tobacco use in specific places, such as open-air terraces, regulating e-cigarettes, and implementing Universal packaging while raising tobacco taxes. However, for nearly two years, the measures in the plan have not yet been implemented.
In 2010, Spain implemented a series of smoking restrictions through Law 42/2010. In 2017, Spain stipulated relevant rules for tobacco products according to Decree 579/2017, prohibiting the manufacture and sale of tobacco products with mint flavor or fragrance. Here Spain then went without any tobacco control measures for five years.
