British Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt recently announced a 10% increase in tariffs on hand-rolled cigarettes. The Treasury expects to gain 40 million pounds (1 pound is approximately RMB 9.03) in revenue through this measure next year. The civil society organization Forest strongly opposes this measure.
Simon Clark, director of Forest, said: "Imposing such high tariffs on hand-rolled cigarettes will force some consumers to buy illegal products. This will have a big impact on financially strapped smokers, many of whom use hand-rolled cigarettes because they are hand-rolled. Cigarettes are cheaper than buying cigarettes.”
