According to the Kathmandu Post, on December 15, the Patan High Court upheld the Kathmandu Municipal Government’s decision to ban the sale of plastic packaging tobacco products.
A bench of Justices Janak Pandey and Brajesh Pyakurel issued an interim order not to implement the decision, while responding to a petition by a tobacco company opposing the decision.
In early December, the city announced that it would ban the sale of tobacco products in plastic packaging within its jurisdiction starting from December 13. In its ruling, the court held that tobacco companies are preparing to package their products in biodegradable packaging.
Kathmandu has tried to ban smoking several times before, but failed each time.
