According to British media stv, the latest research reveals the areas in the UK closest to achieving the goal of being smoke-free. The study found that Shetland had the highest smoking cessation rates across the UK, behind only Richmond in Thamesshire.
Go Smoke Free analyzed Office for National Statistics (ONS) data from the past eight years to determine the average reduction in smoking in each county. The study also used each location's projected smoke-free years to determine its overall score.
Richmond Thamesshire tops the list with a score of 99.9, followed by Shetland with a score of 97.3.
Despite Shetland's relatively small population of around 22,800 people, the islands have made significant progress. According to reports, as of 2022, the smoking rate in the archipelago is only 9.1%, a decrease of 6.7% from 2015. Shetland is expected to be smoke-free by 2026.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesman for Go Smoke Free said: "This research reveals significant changes in smoking trends across the UK counties. We have seen a national push towards a smoke-free generation, most recently led by Prime Minister Sunak The regulations under (Rishi Sunak) also underline this."
