Tobacco production rises in Bangladesh

Tobacco production in Bangladesh's Ramonihat district has increased following good prices last year, Financial Express reported. In 2022, a "pile" of Virginia tobacco leaves costs between 6,000 baht ($54.71) and 7,000 baht.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, farmers have planted 7,600 hectares of tobacco in the region this season. Given current prices, farmers suspect the real number is higher.

Critics have raised concerns about the social and environmental impacts of tobacco production, citing the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and crop protection agents and the impact on workers' health.

"We dissuade farmers and tell them about the health risks of family members, but they are interested in tobacco cultivation because of the high income," said Hamidul Rahaman, deputy director of the Agricultural Extension Department in Ramonihat.
